WILFUL DAMAGE formed a couple of weeks before Deeply Vale Festival in 1978. They threw a brick through Andy Sharrock’s window as a way of asking if they could play at the 1978 Deeply Vale. Wilful Damage, formed by Whitworth punks – Wayne, Phil Odell on drums, Antony ‘Stanny’ Stansfield on guitar .Castleton window cleaner/bass player Andy Schemet joined just after the first festival. They played two Deeply Vale Festivals and toured extensively with Here and Now.
They became legends after their true punk rock set, including shouting and swearing at the audience and trying to get them to dance upset Sid Rawle supposed leader of the hippy tipi people and he walked on stage and threw the singer Wayne off the front of the stage during a song which broke his arm.
This behaviour by the tipi people leader outraged many hippies who immediately embraced punks as part of the northern festival / hippy movement which was the complete opposite reaction to what Sid Rawle thought he would provoke. Wayne returned to the stage and performed another number with a broken arm. In 1979 Wayne had left and Wilful Damage returned to the festival this time with Stanny on vocals - what is a proton neutraliser??? Phil Odell and Andy Schemet would go on to become the rhythm section on the third and final line up of Accident On The East Lancs. Andy Schemet and Phil Odell were also both in The Marauders and Phil Odell was also in Potential Victims amongst others.
